Power Generation

ukpowerplant.jpgIST offers unrivalled experience in the supply of TV inspection and monitoring equipment for the power generation industry. IST is a complete source for state-of-the-art CCTV systems.

High Temperature Viewing

Cameras have been used to view inside coal and oil-fired power utility boilers for decades to facilitate startup or “light-off”. The potential for explosions inside the boiler exists when the fuel does not light as it should, thus viewing this process helps prevent this type of unwanted reaction. In the past, flame detectors were used to assist in light-off but were not as reliable as necessary.

boilerr660.jpgBlack and white cameras were also used for assistance but often pulled out once the boiler was on full load, since they rarely performed well across the full dynamic range of the boiler. IST designs, manufactures, and installs two brands of closed-circuit television systems for these high-temperature applications. Both include special air-cooled high temperature lenses with a color CCD camera to provide real-time monitoring inside the boiler or furnace. The Quadtek Ventus III Air Cooled Probe is designed for continuous operation in boiler temperatures up to 1700º C.

The Quadtek M530 Lynx system provides a remote auto iris unit that allows operators to adjust the camera iris from the comfort of the control room so it can cover the full range of boiler operation from light off to full load. Several lens tube options are available that offer more flexibility in mounting the camera on the boiler wall and incorporate a 75° + horizontal field of view; giving an overall better view. The traditional straight view lens tube is typically used for most wall-fired boilers. The offset angle lens can be used in smaller CE tangential-fired (corner-fired) boilers. The camera is positioned relatively low above the top row of burners while obtaining a full view of the entire boiler (all four corners). This is critical when the operator wants to see the entire “fireball”. The fireball is formed by the combustion process of all four corner burners. As the fuel is injected and ignites, a circular motion takes place and as heat rises, created a fireball reaction in the center of the boiler. Being able to see this fireball aids the operator in controlling overall burner performance and fuel costs.

Also available is the Ventus Portable camera with optional cart for carrying the camera, air filter, tripod, monitor, VCR and tools. Light weight, easy to transport and install, this camera is ideal for troubleshooting or maintenance when you only want video for temporary inspections.

Inspection systems

powerpg-manandgenerator.jpgA broad range of versatile cameras with multiple lens options, pan & tilt positioning equipment and lighting attachments for in air or underwater environments are available for remote visual inspections. Visual inspection of power plant components is essential as plants age and as safety and on-line concerns increase. Power utilities have experienced large cost savings associated with the use of inspection systems to locate, diagnose or document component failures. The ongoing development and application of remote viewing technology is being successfully exploited at fossil, hydroelectric and gas turbine generating stations.

Major CCTV systems

Large multi-camera systems installations are now an essential part of the process monitoring requirements for industrial plants. New safety requirements relating to plant life extensions and new power plant construction demand the use of multi-camera television systems which can continuously monitor machinery and other key plant areas. The primary functional task of the system is to observe specific items of equipment to detect conditions that could lead to plant shutdowns in areas where access is impaired. Systems include customized television control via the plant’s control SCADA, automatic video positioning of manipulators and cranes, and automatic video character reading and data logging.
